Onyx.... I don't think so

I was sold on onxy when I bought my colorpainter. And it basically worked okay ... until i found out that the output size kept changing. Some prints right on the size ... most not. Onyx said that was the way it is. Couldn't believe it. So I tried email support. They had me get a new driver for the colorpainter.... no good. They require you to delete alot of files so the new ones install instead. But to get the driver, you have to pick a profile. Only way to get the driver. I think they are crazy to think that this is acceptable. I couldn't belive the problem even existed. Anyway... my first recommendation while getting a colorpainter is DO NOT get Onyx. I started using my FlexiSign PRo v7.5.5 and with the help of a friend using flexi on his I have it working great. I did 3 see thru window graphics for a ford dealer working off of a photoshop file from the designer. They gave me the entire graphic file. I had to seperate the 48" wide (4 to 6 windows per design) windows in the production manager. It was easy and the prints were fantastic. I don't really understand how to use profiles to their full extent and tweeking colors in Flexi... but I will start to learn. Sizes were right no the money. I still am stunned that Onyx didn't work out. And yes, I have tried all the recommendations, settings etc. Just won't work. I recommend Flexi or the stand alone rip they sell.

I wish it were operator error..

the problem is that tech support can't figure out where I am making the operator error. By the way it's not a out of the box program. Get ready for a  rude learning curve. Check ebay soon for this obsolete software. Sounds like you are a seasoned pro. That makes a big difference on high end technical software. Flexi works like the right brain does. It works. Color sucks but at least the sizing is okay.

RE: Onyx.... I don't think so

I can't say that I am a fan of Onyx either. I had been using PhotoPrint for years and was always salivating over the features in Onyx. When we finally got the software I was very disappointed. PhotoPrint seems to rip much faster with it's fastest diffusion. Onyx was much, much slower and often simple changes in sizing, color correction, etc. would take forever to rerip and print. The preview was very slow also. When I called Onyx to get some help with my problems they basically told me there was nothing they could do. I will say that their profiles and color features are first class. If we produced 100 of every print and could wait for long rip times Onyx would be the way to go.

I'm curious about your ripping problems.  Onyx is a very fast rip.  It may be in your front end.  Are you using a pc or a mac.  If it is a mac then there is your problem.  Onyx is built on a "Jaws" rip platform and the mathematics for this rip are better suited for pc language vs mac.  Macs can design better but they use an entirely different algorythm which causes a slow rip.  This is true with almost any commercial rip available today that has the extensive tools such as Onyx does.

Front End - meaning the computer we use to composite / lay out the files? We design on Macs and export as EPS to our RIP which runs on a PC.

We design on Macs as well, and I have to say that other than a couple of features I wish it had I like Onyx.

The support guys have been very helpful to me and the software seems pretty stable. We have had no sizing issues at all.
