Print modes on 100s...

I was quite surprised some time ago when i read that the speeds of the 100s in the same print modes as in 64s, are actually the same speed as in 64s. This seems strange, because if the carriage speed was the same in 100s and 64s, then 100s would clearly be faster in the same number of passes and same print mode than the 64s.

So let's see - 64s has 2 pass, 4 pass and 8 pass modes, so called 360, 720 standard, 720 fine.
100s has what - 360, 540, 720 and 720 fine. It seems to me that the 540 which is claimed to be 20 sqm/h in 4 pass, is actually the 720 mode of 64s, just faster because the printer is wider, and the 720 4 pass is actually the 720 mode of 64s with "highlight" mode switched on.

And does anyone here have both 64s and 100s? Do they produce the same images for the same profile and modes? I would love to buy 100s for an order i'm about to have, but i would have to have a warranty that the files printed on 100s and 64s will look exactly the same.

Thanks a lot
Joshua

I think they print exactly alike? I can try a test file for you if you want with a friends 64S and my 100S. I was printing on his 64S while waiting for my 100 to arrive and they seem to be the same.

And i assume you're using same RIPs and same profiles? :)

I'm using Onyx 6.5 Postershop and he has the Production House 6.5. I was told the only difference between the 2 is the Production house can handle more than 2 printers where mine can only handle 2.

Hi - so, after using the 100s and 64s for some time, can you actually see if in the same 720 4 pass mode, the carriage speed is the same?

Or, on the other hand - can you actually set the carriage speed in the menu in 100s? I have a hunch that it's not there anymore...

Do let me know :)

Or, if you have the manual for the 100s, can you check what they say about print modes?

And is the nozzle check still in the maintenance mode? :) And is the maintenance mode activated exactly the same way? :)

I'd be grateful. My 100s (actually Oce 6100) is coming end of November. I gotta learn something about it sooner.

can help pyou out a little there joshie.

the nozzle check is still in the maint mode, and yes still opened in exactly the same way using exactly the same code. i believe the carriage speeds are the same therefore the sq ft per hour may be somewhat off. the 540 mode is called fine draft and runs at 4-pass. apparantly it's 20% faster than the normal mode on the 64s. yet to actually run a stopwatch over these, but when i do i'll let you all know

thanks mate :) i owe you and will owe you more if you do run a stopwatch over these. because it seems to me that the actual carriage speed in the 100s is slower than 64s EXCEPT the 540 mode. why?

well... the specs say that the 64s has the following speeds: 32, 16 and 8 sqmph. it's true of course, but only for 64 inch wide media. when you run 42 inch media, these speeds go down, to approx 26, 13 and 6 sqmph (this is rough, but i did run a stopwatch over these!). this is due to the fact that the head must decelerate, stop for a split second and accelerate again. this time is the ineffective time in the duration of each pass.

so... following this logic, if you would run 100 inch media on a 64s (hypothetically haha!) then those speeds would be approx 40, 20 and 10 sqmph. let me emphasize - square meters, not running meters.

and when i read in the leaflet that the 100s has 32, 20, 16 and 8 sqmph speeds... i thought - ok, so they probably switched to "highlight" by default, because as we all know the highlight mode is nothing else but slower carriage speed.

but one thing that does interest me more is the actual printing - can i use the profiles i made for the 64s with the 100s? :) and will it print exactly the same colours? :)

thanks a lot once again
joz
