Just curious to see how many people are running the external heater unit sold as an option. If you are running it, how would you rate it as being worth the $3500 investment?
I have the optional heater and would rate it as a must have item. Especially if you print large volumes. It is a time saver, and less worrying about ruining a print with a smudge.
Not to be insulting, but while you all are spending insane amounts of money for this heater, those of us who can think outside the box find our own solutions...
Keep in mind that most of the jobs you run are not going to span the entire width of the printer. 1 of these units will be enough to provide ample coverage up to 48". When printing wider than that, we usually will concentrate the heat on heavy saturation areas, or in those rare situations where that still isn't enough, we use 2 heater units (we have 3 printers and these things are absolutely priceless to us).
No insult taken. We were just looking for and could afford a complete plug and play solution and Seiko's heater gives us that. It's a cadillac option, engineered & optimized for the printer and found the Seiko heater to be in our particular best interest long term.
"Cadillac Option" Ha! I love it! Thats the perfect description! To be sure, we would've bought the Seiko dryer if we hadn't stumbled onto our wonderful dime-store-grade solution. The bottom line is that you need SOMETHING to help with the drying.
I didn't know it at the time I posted, but the boys in the shop just rolled out a custom heater unit based on (I think) that same cheap heater but this one has two heads side by side. We need to get some design bugs worked out, but I'll post a link to some pictures when it is done.
interesting option on the $140 heater. i will check into that. we had to sort of make the choice in the beginning on the cutter or the heater. we decided to spend the $$$ on the cutter, as i thought $3500 for a heater was a little steep...plus we are in a small, 10x12 air tight room and the heater would be in the way.
Actually we used a custom built heater for our other machines and we will use one for this too. Rather than IR lamps from the front, we use flat heating panels that you can buy for your houses, and they come in any length and are modular, so you can even put three or four rows. You can put them either from the bottom side of the print, as if it was an extension to the rear heater, or you can put it in the front of the media. The temperature is adjustable and additionally you can install a row of cheap 80mm or 120mm fans that you can get at 1 or 2$ a piece if you find a good source.
And exhaust fumes? You've gotta be kidding. After years spent with hard solvents this baby smells like flowers. Ok, maybe an exaggeration, but it smells far less than our other machines.
