Hello to all Seiko/Oce users. This is far the best forum, unfortunatelly I have just discovered it (we have Oce CS6060 for a year now).
I'm trying to find out if the original machine is completely the same as CS6060 (besides firmware of course). I know that the drivers are the same - you can run Oce with Seiko driver in Onyx with no problem.
The reason I would like to be sure is, that I have the new firmware from Seiko (we already have the new Oce firmware installed) and would like to overwrite Oce's one. I figured if that works, then we could use Seiko inks. Why? Because they are significantly cheaper here than Oce OEM inks (but both inks are completely the same - hurah OCE!!).
I tried to insert 2% empty (or full, if you know what I mean :) OCE chip in Seiko cartridge and it works, but can happen to fail if I guess the middle tank somehow is not filled (the display say not to change X ink cartridge but rather check...). Then 2% status is not OK, and the cartridge, even if it's almoust full is unusable with that chip.
Another way would be to recharge the original chip, but nobody seem to know how...
Ufff, anyway, a bit long post for the fist time, but...
yes they are the same, but the firmware would be the thing that oce would have changed to lock in their consumables, otherwise as you say, all oce people would be running standard seiko carts. again not sure if you install the seiko firmware, that you could wipe and go back to the original oce version. i see no reeason why not as it's the nvram chip that gets wiped each time for the firmware to be installed. the manufactures will tell you not to do it, so unless anybody else has had the nerve to try it, then you're a bit stuck.
True. But if I would succesfully instal the seiko firmware, and that this is the only agent, that recognizes cartridge chip, meaning I would be able to use Seiko inks, then I see no reason to swap back to OCE.
The firmware itself is asuming from it's readme file, completely the same - has the same bugs fixed and same improvments (f.e. onprint feed adj., skew ignore), so...
It'j just that I'm afraid if something went wrong and the machine would be down because of bad firmware upgrade....
There is also posibility that the upgrade will not want to proceed, because there is already the "same" one installed (just from Oce)....
Still didn't have the goods to overwrite the firmware. I heard from some Seiko tech that it could be that OCE delibarately hacked some "mistakes" into firmware. Or that one should also chanfe motherboard. And still there could be some hidden differences causing printer not to work.
I will look at the mainboard to se if it's seikos. But it seems that there is lot of unscrewing to get to the board. Has anyone already opened the machine?
The Inkwin guy did offer something of a solution to the problem. I wouldn't call it blatant selling. If dealers and manufacturers start posting purely for their own benefit and not to help (i.e. if a Mimaki dealer tried to sell in this forum or if an ink manufacturer just started advertising their wares regardless of the topic) I will ban them. This was innocent enough.
