edge guard, topic #2

i'm printing on some Sihl 3649 Optilux Backlit Film, very thin material. somehow, the print head unit strikes the edge guard, knocking it away from the material's edge. as it goes back and forth, it knocks the edge guard back and forth.

the first time it happened, the heads deposited big blobs of ink on the edge guard, leading to clogged heads and banding. the second time, i used my straightened-out paper clip to push the edge guard off to the side and i got a good print.

anyone seen this happen? how could the edge guard get struck? it isn't bent, and it has never done this with my other, thicker materials.

do you syill have the two little "skirts" on either end of the carriage? sometimes they slip a little and may scuff the edge guards causing them to move.

This started happening to mine about 4-mths. ago. The seiko Rep. came out and remove the wiping unit and lots of ink buildup was on the outer edges of the print heads. Thus causing the build up to strike the edge protectors. Two options; raise the carriage a little or get seiko over to do a cleaning. Most of the time when they do this heads are damage and have to be replaced. End result being new heads.

oh that reminds me were the wiping unit is, to the immediate left is a small box that used to contain a wheel and spit pads. take the whole thing out, because you do not need it.

if you're getting build up around the heads, normally it's becuase the daily maint. is not being done, or the wiping system is not working correctly.

good suggestions but the heads and skirts are travelling at a good height above the media and edge guards, i don't have ink buildup anywhere and i do my daily maintenance.

somehow it has to do with the very smooth and thin sihl material i'm using. it's only happened with this stuff. maybe other materials are 'toothy' enough to hold the edge guards from beneath???
